Visa (V) and Mastercard (MA) announced a partnership with Ant International to develop a shared Know Your Agent (KYA) framework, enabling AI agents to transact securely across their networks. The collaboration, announced on September 10, 2026, aims to standardize trust verification for AI agents, which could manage up to $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030, according to McKinsey research. The initiative positions both companies to capture growth in AI-driven spending while addressing security and interoperability challenges.
Visa and Mastercard, alongside Ant International, are developing a unified KYA framework to verify AI agents before they process transactions. This system will integrate Ant's Agentic Mobile Protocol, Visa's Trusted Agent Protocol, and Mastercard's Verifiable Intent, allowing agents approved on one network to operate across others. The collaboration follows McKinsey's projection that AI agents could handle $3 trillion to $5 trillion of global consumer commerce by 2030. Ant's involvement provides Visa and Mastercard access to its Alipay+ network, which dominates digital wallets in Asia, where physical cards are less prevalent.
The partnership aligns with Visa and Mastercard's security strategies, including Visa's $2.4 billion acquisition of fraud-detection firm Bio Catch. Both companies have also seen strong revenue growth from value-added services, with Mastercard reporting 20% year-over-year growth in Q2 2026. The KYA framework could increase transaction volumes by enabling AI agents to process purchases beyond human spending limits, though its success depends on adoption rates and regulatory acceptance.
Visa and Mastercard's stock prices remained flat following the announcement, with Visa trading near $367 and Mastercard near $566 on September 10. Investors should monitor adoption of Mastercard's Agent Pay and Visa's Intelligent Commerce pilot programs, as well as the framework's openness to third-party agents. The initiative represents a strategic move to secure their role in AI-driven commerce without introducing new risks or opportunities.
Visa and Mastercard's KYA framework positions them to benefit from AI-driven spending growth, but success hinges on adoption and regulatory alignment. Investors should watch for progress in pilot programs and the framework's openness to third-party agents as the initiative unfolds.
